Originally, this blog was started to chronicle the journey of what can happen when a forgotten horse falls into the loving hands of people who care. Joy has left us, but in letting her go, I continue to live the lessons that she taught me, and attempt to Restore Joy to other horses that come into my life.

I wish I could offer some advice but I have no idea... it looks like a mole or tick or something... I've never seen anything like it before... sorry
:-/
Greta had a much smaller one like that on the back of the tip of her ear. It was gone a few days ago, and I didn't see any signs of bleeding or pus, just a black spot of new skin. Really weird. I have no idea what it is. It might not have been the same thing as what Beau has.
Where is it on the horse's body?
It's on the side of the haunch, below the point of the hip, where the "meat" should be. You can see it in this picture

Thanks, I couldn't tell from the closeup. It looks so bizarre -- I have no idea what it is. Is it fleshy or hard/crusty?
Not crusty. Hard, yes, but not like a wart or sarcoid. Not smushy, either. My initial though was skin cancer, but learned it is prevalent in grey horses, and appear primarily under the tails, the genitals, and around the eyes. Beau just has it on his hip. Perhaps the start of one on the side of his belly.
I wonder if it could be a scar? My horse has a scar kind of like that from a puncture wound, except that his bump has some hair growing on it. Maybe the vet can tell you something when he comes out.
