Beau 8-23-09

So tell me if YOU see it... It appears to me that Beau has put on a little weight.

Beau adores Angel. Every time she moves, he nickers to her and looks after her. If he looks in her general direction, she pins her ears and/or bares her teeth. She doesn't want anything to do with him.

Hard for me to tell if he's gained any weight. But I'm sure he has! Eating will do that for an animal :)

I think he has a little- not a whole lot yet, but his ribs don't look quite so hollow. Poor old guy.

Beau is already looking (and I'm sure feeling) better. Is he any more comfortable on his newly trimmed feet yet?

He does look like he's filled out some.

ktibb - He is still gimpy on his front left foot. I don't think that the pictures showed real well, but there was a lot of blood in his sole.

YES--He already looks a little less like skin drawn over a skeleton!

Boggles the mind how people can see this process happening to horses and then just think it is a normal part of aging.

Do old humans normally look like Auschwitz victims? NO!

....and at least his feet look 1,000% better!

He definitely looks better. Probably no longer dehydrated, for one thing.

Wow! Just found your blog though Fugly Horse. Poor ol' guy! He does look like he is gaining some weight.. and MY GOD! Those feet were horrible. They're looking a ton better. I also recently rescued an Arabian. Very underweight... just wanted to know what, and how much you are feeding Beau. Here is his pics link if you want to take a look. :)

Jess - Right now, I'm giving Beau 3 pounds of Purina Equine Senior , and 9 pounds of orchard grass pellets, am and pm.

I've ordered some Fastrack - a probiotic, which should be here by Saturday with any luck.

This weekend, I'll start him on 1 pound of Purina Amplify, am and pm, which is 30% fat. I'll also be starting a daily dewormer on Saturday.

What a great person you are to help that old guy out! Do you wet down his hay pellets before he eats them ...sorta like mush? Dumb question I know but I really want to know...

I started out soaking the hay pellets. But he was only eating about half of them, then they'd get rancid. I'm going off his preference - he eats better and more if they aren't soaked.

I think he's not putting on any fat yet, but is rehydrating nicely - he had that saggy-skinned look of an animal that's not had enough good water for a while now. (Or that refused to drink in transit, or for a few hours in the new place!)

He does look a bit less sunken in. His demeanor is so much more relaxed looking. Animals are amazing at being able to just relax into a place sometimes...
