Do you talk to your horses?

I don't mean "Hi baby! Momma loves you!"

I mean TALK to them! Out loud. About "stuff".

Here's what happened at my barn today.

I let a gal at work wrap me around the axle. I should have just let it go, but I got spun up and it pissed me off. Even though we (Our Division) had a team building party and exchanged gifts, I was still pissy when I got home. So I went out to feed.

When I walked into the barn, the conversation (one sided as it was) went like this, "Hi girls! You will never guess what that moron did today!" I was ranting as I fed, telling the girls about the stupidity of the woman at work, telling what I should have said if I'd been a quick thinker. I was talking to them as if I would a person. No wait...not talking... RANTING! Venting my anger! Actually starting to feel a bit better.

Then I turned around. Mike was standing there, looking at me as if I'd COMPLETELY lost my mind, looking like he might just call the paddy wagon to come pick up the looney ranting in his barn.

He said, "What ELSE do you tell them?" I said, "I tell them what a jerk you are for sneaking up on me!" He just grinned and I ignored him. But I have to say I was more than a little embarrassed at getting caught. Then I thought, what the heck, at least HE didn't have to deal with all the drama.

I'm always talking to my animals when I'm around them - like they were people. Normal occurrance at our place but I can see the funny side of your situation. Oops! sprung ..... LOL

It's also not a bad thing around horses because your voice soothes them and they always know where you are.

It's a way of communicating to them that you're their buddy and they come to trust much quicker if there is dialogue (albeit one sided most of the time) between you. I say most of the time because my cat will respond vigorously to any conversation I throw at him, as will my arab mare.

What I really hate is when you're talking to your hubby or whoever at the supermarket and they walk away for some reason, leaving you chatting away to no-one which makes you feel like a real idiot.

I have been caught chatting with my girls so many times that Chad calls me Dr. Doolittle. I am not even embarrassed or shocked when he suddenly appears and I'm midsentence anymore...The land lord always thinks I am on the phone when he catches me talking to them...funny stuff! I haven't set him straight...gotta hold on to some of my cool points with the Old Fart!! ( :

I may not have horses, but I do talk to my cat... He's a great listener and every once in a while he'll meow back at me or squint his eyes at me. I think it's a great stress reliever, even if everyone else thinks you're nuts. They just don't realize that it is they who are nuts! :)

I talk to mine all the time. Silly stuff mostly. They like it. And, your animal friend will not tell anyone else, well maybe they talk to each other after your gone. "Boy, mom was in a twist today"!. LOL

I talk to all my animals just like they were people, I think it strengthens the bond we have with them...especially the horses and mules. To them I think it reassures them that everything is calm, cool, and OK when we speak to them while feeding, grooming, etc. And, the best part is, they can't speak back and give their opinion....they are just there to listen.... :-)

Does singing count? I've been known to sing when trail riding alone.

Singing while trail riding alone...yup that counts. Angel was a goofy dork one time when we were out alone. Everytime i grumped ay her she settled down. so i spent the rest of the ride talking to myself, looking like a dork, but it made the rest of the ride enjoyable!

ROFL! Funny! And yeah...I've talked to my horse before...as well as his pasturemates! I'm not for certain if I've been caught yet...I think I have a time or two before though...but those people didn't say anything...for which I'm quite grateful...LOL!

ROFL - that was a hoot Karen!! I can just see you there swinging the feed bucket and going on...and the girls just want something to eat. Too funny!!!

I use to talk to my husband's dog Josie - she would stay at home and so we would have talks about her owner - my hubby. Because Josie was female I would say "You understand because you are a girl"

Josie is gone now but I sure wish I had 10 more just like her.

Thanks for the laugh and trot down memory lane.

Oh I was gesturing, flailing, dropping feed "with energy", leaning into the stalls saying "You know what I mean?!" I'm sure I looked like a total lunatic. My poor husband, see what he has to deal with?

I sometimes rant at the dogs while I'm on the toilet too... (TMI - I know...sorry)

I laugh because I do the same things, not because I think you're weird...although you may well be. ;)

I do that, but I don't speak way loud, unless I'm really pissed. I do talk to her about what we'll be doing today, like trimming her feet and that I want her to be patient and a good girl... usually it works, but I think it's mostly because we put our expectations out there and feel better afterwards.

I do think our horses understand everything we feel and think. One time, when I didn't think my horses could really feel what I was. I went outside to hug my mare. She was cooperative and followed me around, knowing I was upset and deeply sad. I put my arms around her neck and pressed my cheek against her. I shed a few tears and then, my emotions changed and I felt a lot of love filling my heart. My mare put her head on my shoulder and left it there. I honnestly felt like she understood and was trying to console me. Then I felt really relaxed, I still had my arms around her loosly. Then, I felt her relax, so much that she layed down, I was surprised but I kept beside her and rubbed her neck and head. She layed for about 5 minutes until my boyfriend came to the barn.
The sadness was gone and I felt warm and fuzzy inside. It was that event that made me realize that horses really do know what is up with us and understand feelings! Since then, I am much gentler to my mare and talk to her about everything we do or have done.

I tell my horse absolutely everything! Along with my dog, they probably hear me talk more than most people-Ahhh, my cheap therapy.

They don't deserve it, but yes, I sing to them too. If I sing to the dogs they are often tempted to accompany me by howling. I like to think they are complimenting me, but I don't know...

I talk to my horses all the time. My hubby used to think I am nuts but I think he is realizing how it benefits him. If I go out and tell the horses all the stuff that ticked me off during the day, then he doesn't have to pretend he is interested :) And ponies tell no tales...

Oh, and the one time I quit talking to my horses while I was out with them, I spooked my weanling when I walked behind him. I think he thought I was one of the yearlings and he kicked me and I thought he broke my knee. I learned a valuable lesson THAT day :)
