Originally, this blog was started to chronicle the journey of what can happen when a forgotten horse falls into the loving hands of people who care. Joy has left us, but in letting her go, I continue to live the lessons that she taught me, and attempt to Restore Joy to other horses that come into my life.

The choking thing - there was a couple things going on.
First, his feed tub was in a corner that shared a wall with Angel. So Angel could put her nose within six inches of his tub, even though there were bars between them. Another horse's nose being that close meant "gotta skarf the chow so I don't have to share".
The alfalfa pellets don't break down as quickly as the senior feed, so they got stuck. AND he wasn't chewing them like he should.
So I moved him to an outside stall so when he's eating he doesn't have to "look" at a begger next to his tub. I also soak the hay pellets until it's just green slop. He hasn't had a problem since. He seems to be chewing flake hay just fine.

Much better! You can see by the coat shedding out that he's getting healthy again. Yeah, you really have to make mushy mush - Thai's people had a choke once with her, too, before they learned how sloppy to make it. He will be fat in another month.
